Viking 's newest ocean-going vessel , the Viking Mira, has been officially christened during a traditional ceremony in Venice, Italy. The ship's godmother was Rebecca "Becky" Webb Wilson, a renowned lawyer, author, photographer, and philanthropist. Following the ceremony, the Viking Mira will continue its inaugural season sailing the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
“We are proud to welcome the newest Viking Mira to our fleet of elegant sister ships,” said Torstein Hagen, Viking’s CEO. “We are also deeply honored to have Rebecca as Viking’s new godmother. Her lifelong commitment to public service, exploration, and cultural understanding is an inspiration to us all.”.
During the christening ceremony, Rebecca Webb Wilson used a traditional Viking axe to cut a ribbon, releasing a bottle of Norwegian aquavit, which was smashed against the ship's hull in accordance with maritime tradition. Attendees also enjoyed performances by Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the world's most renowned crossover sopranos and godmother of the Viking Jupiter.
Rebecca Webb Wilson has dedicated her professional career to public service, philanthropy, and the promotion of cultural understanding. A graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Memphis School of Law, she began her career as a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways, where she developed her passion for travel and learning about other cultures.
She later served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and has held leadership positions in educational, healthcare, and civic organizations. A nature photographer and avid traveler, she is also the founder of several youth leadership initiatives aimed at building bridges between different communities. Among these is Bridge Builders, a program created to combat prejudice and foster meaningful connections among young people from diverse backgrounds, which has already engaged more than 20,000 participants.
The Viking Mira is the latest addition to the company's award-winning ocean fleet. The ship features cabins with private balconies, elegant Scandinavian design, spacious public areas bathed in natural light, and numerous al fresco dining options.
Considered a small ship within the ocean segment, it has 54,300 gross registered tons, 499 cabins and capacity for 998 passengers.
