The autonomous city of Melilla experienced an unprecedented day in its recent history with the simultaneous arrival of two international cruise ships, the Norwegian Dawn and the Azamara Quest, bringing with them more than 4,300 passengers and crew. This event marks a decisive step in consolidating the destination's place on the Mediterranean cruise map.
The presence of both ships in the port of Melilla marks the first time the city has hosted two vessels of this type simultaneously, testing its logistical and accommodation capacity in the face of a significant volume of visitors in a single day.
Local authorities have given a very positive assessment of the operation. The President of the Autonomous City, Juan José Imbroda, highlighted the strategic importance of this double port call, emphasizing that it represents a turning point for Melilla's positioning as a cruise destination. He also praised the coordination between government agencies, businesses, and the local community to ensure a satisfactory experience for visitors.
For his part, the president of the Port Authority, Manuel Ángel Quevedo, highlighted the technical and operational significance of the event. Both ships docked at Northeast 2 and Northeast 3 piers, the latter recently adapted to accommodate large cruise ships. In fact, the Norwegian Dawn has become the largest vessel to have operated in the port to date, both in terms of size and capacity.
The infrastructure improvements have been key to the day's success. These include the installation of new mooring systems, the adaptation of passenger spaces, shaded areas and reception areas, as well as a logistical reorganization that has facilitated both the disembarkation and transfer of cruise passengers to the city center and the various scheduled excursions.
The economic impact of this double stopover has been equally significant. It is estimated that around 3,000 passengers have had the opportunity to explore Melilla, enjoy its cultural offerings, shop in local businesses, and sample its cuisine. To accommodate this influx, a special plan was implemented, including tourist information points, cultural activities, markets, and extended opening hours for shops and restaurants.
Furthermore, the event served to showcase Melilla's tourism potential, which combines attractions such as its privileged climate, beaches, modernist heritage, fortified sites, and a diverse and unique cultural identity. All of this reinforces its position as an emerging destination on cruise routes.
The Port Authority is confident that the success of this operation will help improve Melilla's image among shipping companies and lead to a gradual increase in port calls in the coming years.
