The group MEYER WERFT presents the “Vision” project , the world’s first 100% electric battery-powered cruise ship with a gross tonnage (GT) exceeding 80,000 . This concept study demonstrates how sustainable innovations can redefine the future of the cruise industry.
“We asked ourselves how we could use innovation to reduce CO₂ and contribute to decarbonization, not in 50 years, but much sooner. We can achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 95%,” explained Tim Krug, from the conceptual development group at MEYER WERFT.
Each year, MEYER WERFT presents a completely new and innovative concept at Seatrade Cruise Global—the world’s largest trade fair for the industry—reinforcing its position as a technology leader. Johannes Bade, responsible for the development program behind “Vision,” added: “With battery-electric cruise ships, we offer a competitive product based on existing technologies. We are opening up entirely new opportunities for our customers to operate sustainably and profitably in the long term.”
The Vision project will be 275 meters long, have a capacity for 1,856 passengers, and a gross tonnage of approximately 82,000 GT. The battery system will be supplied by Corvus Energy.
“The technology is available today. If an order were placed this year, we could deliver the first ship as early as 2031,” said Thomas Weigend, Commercial Director of MEYER WERFT.
Fredrik Witte, CEO of Corvus Energy, added that this project demonstrates that the technology is safe, mature, and ready to transform the cruise industry.
This battery system could cover many typical European routes, such as Civitavecchia to Barcelona. Furthermore, it is expected that around 100 European ports will have adequate charging infrastructure by 2030.
If a shipowner requests it, these ships could also be built as hybrids, with small generators, even allowing transatlantic crossings.
The project also changes the traditional design of cruise ships:
- The large traditional fireplace disappears
- The vertical exhaust gas duct is eliminated
- The upper deck (sun deck) has been completely redesigned, now with unobstructed views
- It includes protected glazed areas for operation in any weather
- The water park is now located in an interior area at the stern, usable all year round
Another major advantage of the all-electric system is the reduced noise, as well as less vibration and greater passenger comfort. By eliminating the conventional main engines, the onboard environment would be noticeably quieter.
The Vision project represents a potential giant leap for the industry: a large, fully electric cruise ship operating on real-world routes, with up to 95% fewer emissions and a possible entry into service in 2031 if ordered soon. If it comes to fruition, it would be one of the biggest technological shifts in the history of cruising.
