Two-thirds of the ships in the MSC Cruises are already equipped with SpaceX's Starlink onboard connectivity. The program will reach the rest of the fleet in May 2024.
This new connectivity, based on low Earth orbit, provides faster internet speeds, improved Wi-Fi in cabins and public spaces, reduced latency levels, and lower operating costs for 15 of the company's 22 ships following bandwidth and data traffic testing in 2022.
The first of MSC Cruises' ships to be equipped with Starlink was MSC Magnifica in December 2022.
MSC Cruises has observed that onboard bandwidth consumption continues to increase, driven by both the growing number of connected devices and the number of applications used by passengers.
Starlink will provide MSC Cruises with sufficient capacity to meet the future needs of its passengers and crew, as well as the technical requirements of its ships.
MSC Cruises ships currently equipped with Starlink are: MSC Divina, MSC Euribia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Lirica, MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview and MSC Virtuosa.
MSC Opera and MSC World Europa will be added this month, while MSC Armonia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Musica, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Splendida will have enhanced connectivity before the summer season of 2024.
EXPLORA I, the first of six luxury ships from MSC Cruises' sister company, Explora Journeys, is also equipped with Starlink. EXPLORA II will be equipped with the enhanced connectivity when it sets sail for the first time in August 2024.
MSC Cruises offers on board its fleet the “Browse Selection” and “Browse & Stream Selection” packages, which are adapted to the needs of customers to cover the connection and number of devices required during a voyage.
