Global Ports Holding (GPH), the cruise port operator, celebrates a major step towards environmental sustainability with the successful integration of onshore power at its subsidiary, Valletta Cruise Port.
On December 1, 2023, the Viking Saturn became the first cruise ship in history to receive all its power through the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the Cruise Port of Valletta.
The following day, the Viking Venus docked at Caldera Pier, joined the Viking Saturn in the historic harbor, and also simultaneously received electrical power ashore, with both Viking successfully powered via OPS.
This achievement is of great importance to both the Cruise Port of Valletta and Global Ports Holding, as it represents the first instance of land-to-ship connectivity within GPH's extensive port network.
Mehmet Kutman, Chairman and CEO of Global Ports Holding, expressed his gratitude: “This achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation. I extend my sincere thanks to the Maltese Government and Infrastructure Malta for their pivotal role in bringing this project to fruition. I especially thank the Valletta Cruise Port team for their constant efforts and coordination.”

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta, and supported by Valletta Cruise Port, provides shore power at the 5 main cruise ship piers of Valletta's Grand Harbour.
This significantly improves air quality and drastically reduces emissions. Shore power supplies provide cruise ships with the energy they need and shut down onboard generators, thus complying with stringent environmental regulations. Shore power connections for docked vessels offer a quick, easy, and flexible connection to the ship, supporting the maritime industry's sustainability efforts.
During a visit to the Port of Valletta's cruise terminal, Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed his strong support for the initiative, calling it a crucial undertaking. He emphasized the government's commitment to promoting sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
He emphasized the project's role not only in addressing these challenges but also in presenting a significant economic opportunity. Prime Minister Abela stated: “This project, among many others, demonstrates the Maltese Government's commitment to leading the implementation of essential changes for a robust and sustainable economy.”
This milestone not only marks a historic first, but also signifies a strategic step towards the wider application of sustainable practices across Global Ports Holding's port network.
