The launch of the Mein Schiff Relax , the first of two dual-fuel (Liquefied Natural Gas and Marine Diesel) InTUItion-class cruise ships being built by Fincantieri for TUI Cruises, took place at the Monfalcone shipyard. The ship's godmother was Elena Sperti , a shipyard employee.
The ship is a prototype developed by Fincantieri that enhances the sustainability features of TUI Cruises, a company that has one of the most advanced fleets from an ecological point of view.
Energy efficiency is at the heart of the project, with the dual objective of containing operating consumption and minimizing environmental impact, in line with all the latest regulations on the matter.
The ships will be able to use LNG, the cleanest marine fuel currently available on a large scale. They will also be future-proof thanks to their ability to burn low-emission fuels such as bioLNG or eLNG: an important step towards climate-neutral shipping.
The units will also be equipped with catalytic converters and a generating turbine that harnesses the waste heat from diesel generators and an electrical ground connection.
All of this ensures virtually emission-free operation while in port (around 40% of operating time). Finally, the vessels will be equipped with a more efficient waste treatment system, capable of transforming organic matter into charcoal through a thermal process.
