Hurtigruten relaunches the MS Vesterålen with a new concept inspired by its coastal heritage

Hurtigruten has relaunched the MS Vesterålen with a unique onboard concept inspired by the company's 133-year history of sailing along the Norwegian coast.

Hurtigruten relaunches the MS Vesterålen with a new concept inspired by its coastal heritageFollowing extensive refurbishment, the MS Vesterålen has returned to regular service between Bergen and Kirkenes, combining modern comfort with the character and nostalgia of one of Hurtigruten's most distinctive ships. One hundred cabins and several public areas have recently been renovated, and new accommodation categories, such as Arctic Superior cabins and Mini Suites, have been added, all while carefully preserving the ship's original style, charm, and intimate atmosphere.

As the smallest ship in the Hurtigruten fleet, the MS Vesterålen offers a particularly intimate and personalized coastal experience, with just 133 cabins. Onboard, travelers will find numerous historical details, artwork inspired by the Norwegian coast, references to classic design, and tributes to the generations of ships and crews that have helped build the company's legacy.

“With the return to service of the MS Vesterålen, we are not simply putting a ship back into operation. We are breathing new life into a living part of our history and traditions,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten. “Vesterålen offers a completely unique travel experience, both for those who live on the Norwegian coast and for international visitors.”.

The new onboard concept aims to bring Hurtigruten's maritime and coastal heritage closer to passengers through every detail of the experience. In the restaurant, for example, the menus are inspired by culinary offerings dating back to the 1930s, while the crew uniforms and the specially designed tableware incorporate classic elements from the company's history. The result is an atmosphere that blends nostalgia and modernity, reflecting the close relationship that the MS Vesterålen has maintained with the Norwegian coast for decades.

“The changes have been very well received by passengers who have traveled on the first sailings after the renovation,” explained André Pettersen, Hurtigruten’s Director of Product and Hotel Operations. “Many highlight the special atmosphere on board and the combination of historical details with modern amenities. This confirms that we have succeeded in preserving the unique character of the Vesterålen while raising the experience to today’s standards.”.

Hurtigruten relaunches the MS Vesterålen with a new concept inspired by its coastal heritageThe MS Vesterålen now operates year-round on Hurtigruten's historic Original Coastal Express route, connecting the cities of Bergen and Kirkenes, traversing some of the most spectacular scenery on the Norwegian coast.
