American Cruise Lines christened the American Maverick last week in Newport, Rhode Island, during its inaugural 9-day New England Islands cruise, departing from and returning to Providence, Rhode Island. The celebration took place on board and brought together passengers, crew, local partners, and numerous employees from the company's headquarters in Connecticut.
The American Maverick is the country's newest small cruise ship and the latest addition to the company's growing fleet, designed exclusively for sailing in the United States and equipped with amenities that, according to the cruise line, surpass even those of some of the world's finest river cruise ships. Following its arrival, the American Ranger, American Mariner, and American Navigator are scheduled for delivery next year. In addition, American Cruise Lines also launched the new river cruise ship American Encore in May.
The christening celebrations for the American Maverick took place overlooking Newport Harbor and were attended by numerous people associated with the company, including more than 50 employees from its headquarters in Guilford, Connecticut. Company President and CEO Charles B. Robertson spoke during the ceremony, as did the ship's godmother, Susan Renner, Chairwoman and Treasurer of American Cruise Lines. All attendees gathered on the ship's upper deck for the official blessing and the traditional bottle-breaking ceremony, before enjoying a classic New England-style lobster feast at nearby Fort Adams State Park.
“We demanded a lot of ourselves with the American Maverick, and we were surprised to find that we also raised the bar for the entire river cruise industry,” said Charles B. Robertson. “The American Maverick sets a new standard that others should follow, and with eight more ships currently under construction, it demonstrates that the U.S. river cruise market will continue to lead the industry.”
The new American Maverick can accommodate 130 passengers. It features four decks, cabins with private balconies—including single cabins and suites—several panoramic lounges, including one on the top deck with a walking track, a chart room, a main restaurant, a casual café, a gym, and other facilities rarely found on ships of this size.
Although the American Maverick now holds the title of the newest cruise ship built in the United States, it also represents the latest addition to a long line of innovative small vessels developed by American Cruise Lines.
The company, whose fleet sails entirely under the American flag, remains firmly committed to developing the domestic cruise market, reflecting the spirit of American innovation and engineering. Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence this coming July 4th, American Cruise Lines will feature more domestic itineraries and more new ships sailing the country's waterways than at any other time in its 50-year history.
