The Port of A Coruña is experiencing one of the busiest days of the cruise season with the simultaneous arrival of four ships, which involves a significant movement of passengers and a complex logistical operation and passenger care involving around 200 people.
Following
the arrival of three ships yesterday, the cruise ships Arvia, Celebrity Apex, Deutschland, and Europa will dock at the A Coruña piers today, carrying a total of 14,378 people, including passengers and crew: 10,735 passengers and 3,643 crew members. To manage this significant influx of visitors and ensure the smooth operation of the ships, approximately 200 people are involved, including personnel from the Port Authority, Corunna Cruise Terminal, the Maritime Authority, the Civil Guard, the National Police, shipping agents (in this case, Rubine e Hijos, Consiflet, and Pérez y Cía), pilots, mooring crews, transport companies, private security services, cleaning and waste collection services, crane operators who install the gangways, as well as tour operators and passenger services staff.
The port has hired private security personnel, as well as drivers and guides for the 31 coaches chartered by the ships for excursions. Parallel activities are also being generated, such as taxi, tuk-tuk, bicycle, electric scooter, and Segway services. In addition to the port's operations, the city is mobilizing additional resources in sectors such as commerce, hospitality, and tourism services, which are increasing their staff to meet the expected high influx of visitors.
With the aim of providing adequate service to travelers and facilitating their mobility, the Port Authority will open three passenger reception terminals. In addition to the existing one at the Transatlantic Pier, the terminal that normally serves as an alternative at Calvo Sotelo will be opened, and a third has been installed at the San Diego Pier. From this last pier, a shuttle bus service of four buses will depart to expedite passenger flow at the entrances and exits of the port area, providing continuous service for passengers and crew of the Celebrity APEX to the city center.
The city will experience a day of significant tourist and economic impact, estimated at one million euros. Businesses, restaurants, and the main cultural and heritage sites of A Coruña and the metropolitan area anticipate a notable influx of visitors, on what will be the second busiest cruise ship day in the port's history, surpassed only by the record five cruise ship calls on April 22, 2015, when nearly 15,000 passengers and crew members arrived in a single day.
