MSC Foundation and Vellmarí are promoting the recovery of Mediterranean Posidonia in Formentera

The marine restoration project seeks to protect one of the most important and threatened ecosystems in the Mediterranean

Beneath the crystal-clear waters of Formentera lies one of the planet's most valuable ecosystems, and also one of the most threatened: the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. This veritable underwater forest, essential to the health of the Mediterranean, is now the focus of an ambitious environmental restoration project spearheaded by the MSC Foundation in partnership with the Spanish association Vellmarí.

MSC Foundation and Vellmarí are promoting the recovery of Mediterranean Posidonia in FormenteraInvited by both organizations, we had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the work being done in Formentera to restore degraded areas of Posidonia seagrass using scientific replanting and marine conservation techniques. The experience included a trip to sea and a snorkeling and scuba diving excursion over one of the restoration areas, where we were able to directly observe the new underwater plantings and even carefully touch some of the shoots already attached to the seabed.

The feeling underwater is difficult to describe. What from the surface appears to be simply sand and clear sea, actually harbors a living ecosystem upon which much of the Mediterranean's biodiversity depends.

What is Posidonia oceanica and why is it so important?

Although many people mistake it for seaweed, Posidonia oceanica is a higher marine plant found exclusively in the Mediterranean. It has roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, and can form enormous underwater meadows capable of surviving for thousands of years.

The waters around Ibiza and Formentera are home to some of the best-preserved Posidonia seagrass meadows in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the colonies in the Balearic Islands are considered among the oldest living organisms on the planet.

Its environmental importance is enormous as it produces large amounts of oxygen, acts as a great CO₂ absorber helping to reduce the impact of climate change, protects beaches from erosion and waves, improves water transparency and quality, and serves as a refuge and breeding ground for fish, mollusks, and numerous marine species, which directly contributes to the balance of coastal ecosystems.

Scientists consider posidonia one of the planet's great "blue sinks" because of its extraordinary ability to store carbon for centuries.

The problem: the disappearance of seagrass meadows

Despite their enormous ecological value, Posidonia oceanica meadows have been suffering progressive deterioration for decades in different areas of the Mediterranean, and among the main threats are the uncontrolled anchoring of boats, anchors on the seabed, general pollution, the increase in water temperature, tourist and urban pressure, among others.

In destinations with intense nautical activity, such as the Balearic Islands, the protection of Posidonia seagrass has become an environmental and maritime priority. The loss of these meadows not only affects biodiversity but also the quality of beaches and the stability of Mediterranean coastlines. According to data from the MSC Foundation, significant areas of seagrass meadows disappear every year in different regions of the world, with direct consequences for the marine ecosystem and the ocean's natural capacity to absorb carbon.

The Vellmarí project in Formentera

The Vellmarí association, founded by marine biologist and National Geographic explorer Manu San Félix, has been working for years on marine research, conservation, and environmental education in the Mediterranean. The project, developed in partnership with the MSC Foundation, focuses on the active restoration of damaged Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows in the waters off Formentera. This involves using scientific recovery and underwater monitoring techniques that allow for the reintroduction of new growth and the tracking of its development over time. Their goal is to repopulate 30% of the Posidonia meadows.

During our visit, we were able to see how the work combines science, technology, outreach, and environmental conservation. Exploring the reforestation areas allows us to understand the complexity and delicate nature of a process that requires years of monitoring.

The small shoots attached to the seabed represent much more than an underwater plantation; they are the beginning of the recovery of an entire ecosystem.

The MSC Group's foundation promotes international initiatives related to marine conservation, scientific research, education, humanitarian action, and sustainable development. Its programs include coral restoration projects, marine biodiversity protection, and seagrass meadow recovery.

In the case of Formentera, the collaboration with Vellmarí demonstrates how cooperation between private entities, scientists and local organizations can generate tangible results for the Mediterranean.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is its ability to bring marine conservation closer to the public in a real and direct way. Being able to enter the water, observe the restoration areas, and visually understand how an underwater meadow recovers completely transforms the perception of marine sustainability. Posidonia ceases to be an abstract concept and becomes something visible, fragile, and extraordinarily valuable.

At a time when ocean protection is playing an increasingly important role in the maritime and tourism industries, initiatives like this also reflect an evolution in the relationship between tourism, navigation, and environmental conservation.
