Tarragona Cruise Port has officially launched its 2026 cruise season. The Wind Star, from WindStar Cruises, inaugurated what promises to be a record-breaking season, both in terms of the number of port calls and passengers. A total of 81 port calls are scheduled, representing a 28.6% increase compared to 2025, and nearly 160,000 passengers (+23.3%) are expected during the eight-month season, which runs from April to November.

This season, 39 different ships are expected, 16 of which will be docking at the Port for the first time. The main novelty is the increase in calls by high-end cruise ships, driven primarily by Viking Cruises, which will go from three calls and 5,000 passengers in 2025 to 17 calls and 34,800 passengers projected for this year. Meanwhile, MSC Cruises reaffirms its commitment to Tarragona for another year, adding six more calls, increasing from 26 to 32. Its weekly itinerary will be operated by the MSC Orchestra, a ship with fewer passengers, allowing the company to align itself with the regional cruise tourism model based on sustainable growth.
The Wind Star has docked at the Moll de Baleares with 148 passengers, arriving from Palma de Mallorca. It will depart from Tarragona at 9 p.m., bound for Barcelona, where its journey will end. Its stop in Tarragona is part of a 10-day itinerary called 'Treasures of Southern Spain & Morocco'. It set sail from Lisbon on April 7 and has also stopped in Tangier, Malaga, Cartagena, and Valencia.
This will be one of 45 planned high-end cruise ship calls to Tarragona this season, representing a 40.6% increase compared to last year's 32. Compared to 2019, high-end cruise ship calls have increased sixfold. This surge is the result of a strategy implemented by the Port Authority, the terminal operator, and the destination itself to consolidate Tarragona as a boutique port, with a strong focus on premium and luxury cruises. In this regard, it's worth noting that this year, these types of cruises will account for 55.5% of the 81 planned calls.
“This is a niche market that brings more cruise ships and, therefore, more port calls, but with a lower passenger volume, since these are exclusive ships with smaller capacity, carrying high-spending cruise passengers. This increase in port calls without causing saturation of cruise passengers is precisely what we are looking for to achieve sustainable growth for the destination,” explains Genoveva Climent, Head of the Commercial and Business Development Department.
In this regard, Genoveva Climent states that “our greatest strength is the ability to combine operational excellence with a first-rate cultural and tourist environment, which makes us an increasingly attractive alternative for shipping companies seeking to diversify itineraries and offer unique experiences to their passengers.”.
The growth experienced this year by high-end cruises is primarily due to Viking Cruises' commitment to Tarragona. The cruise line will increase its port calls from three and 5,000 passengers in 2025 to 17 calls and a projected 34,800 cruise passengers. The company will operate with eight different ships, carrying mostly North American passengers.
It's worth noting that six of Viking's 17 stops will include one night in port and two days at the destination. Additionally, four more stops will feature two nights in port and three days at the destination, allowing cruise passengers to enjoy various experiences and explore its main attractions.
Another key player in the 2026 cruise season in Tarragona is MSC Cruises. The cruise line is increasing its presence in Tarragona, adding six more calls compared to the previous year, going from 26 to 32. While the company has increased the number of calls, it has opted for a ship with fewer passengers for its weekly itinerary, aligning itself with the regional cruise tourism model that promotes sustainable growth and avoids the overcrowding experienced by the main ports of the western Mediterranean.
The MSC Orchestra has a capacity for 3,000 cruise passengers and will dock at the Port every Friday from May 1st to October 23rd. It will offer an 8-day itinerary, starting and ending in Tarragona, with stops in Valencia, Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Civitavecchia (Rome), Genoa (Portofino), and Marseille. In total, the MSC Orchestra will make 26 port calls. Of the company's remaining six ports of call, the MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica will each make two, while the MSC Sinfonia and MSC Divina will each make one.
This season, the Moll de Baleares cruise terminal will host premieres and unique calls. A highlight is the maiden voyage of the Buenavista, operated by Corazul Cruceros, on July 4th. This new cruise line has chosen Port Tarragona for its inaugural trip, a four-day itinerary with stops in Toulon (France), Livorno (Italy), and Barcelona.
Also, on August 12, the day of the eclipse, the Cunard Line's Queen Victoria cruise ship will call at Tarragona. This British company schedules several itineraries throughout the year coinciding with exceptional astronomical phenomena, and this year it has created a two-week itinerary through the western Mediterranean, with the stop in Tarragona as its highlight. The itinerary will combine a visit to the city in the morning with an afternoon viewing of the eclipse.
The 2026 season also brings new features to the Tarragona Cruise Port terminal. The main one is the opening of a shop where travelers can purchase souvenirs and local products. The shop is finalizing preparations and will open in the coming weeks. In addition, the terminal has also installed an ATM, enhancing its services and providing a better experience for cruise passengers.
