The improvements are being carried out through a joint venture between CTL Maritime, part of the MSC Group, and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. The island will welcome cruise passengers, including those from MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, as well as other cruise lines and private clients, including those from Casa de Campo Resort & Villas.

Catalina Island, declared a Natural Monument of the Dominican Republic and recognized for its natural environment, white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and coral reefs, will be the subject of a major renovation according to the announced plans.

Passengers will be able to enjoy a more comfortable and memorable beach day, with an improved food and beverage offering, more shaded areas to relax and more options to enjoy the sea, such as cabanas and Balinese beds, a water sports center and improved changing areas, showers and toilets, all next to the white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and coral reefs of Catalina Island.

MSC Cruises will begin year-round operations from La Romana this November, offering passengers more options to discover the Southern Caribbean with the convenience of a home port in the region. MSC Opera will offer weekly departures, with the option to book a seven-night cruise or extend your vacation with a consecutive 14-night "butterfly" cruise.

Improvements to Catalina Island will be carried out responsibly and in accordance with local environmental regulations, in order to protect the destination for future visits.

The planned improvements on Catalina Island include:

  • Dining facilities: A central open-air buffet-style dining pavilion will be the island's main dining area, offering international dishes and local specialties. Adjacent to it, a covered dining area will allow guests to enjoy al fresco lunches with panoramic sea views.
  • Beverage facilities: an open-air, palapa-style tropical bar will offer soft drinks and function as a covered social space overlooking the ocean.
  • Water sports center: a landmark for visitors interested in exploring the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island, with equipment available for hire.
  • Cabins: The island will have sun loungers and day cabins available for rent, offering the most comfortable way to enjoy the Catalina Island experience, for both couples and families.
  • Improved facilities: The island's functional facilities will be renovated, including modern, comfortable and thoughtfully designed changing rooms, showers and sanitary facilities.
