Oceanwide Expeditions has signed a letter of intent for the construction and delivery of two new eco-sail expedition vessels. These ships have been designed to offer the same authentic, small-boat experience that characterizes the company, while reinforcing its commitment to more sustainable and environmentally friendly polar tourism.
Both ships will have a capacity of 146 passengers and will incorporate several sustainability-focused features. Of particular note is their hybrid propulsion system with sails, which will reduce fuel consumption and operational emissions. These new vessels represent an evolution of the design of Oceanwide Expeditions' current Hondius class, incorporating significant improvements in both operations and the passenger experience. The first is scheduled to be launched in 2029 and the second in 2030. Sales for both will begin in early 2027, with further information to be released in the coming months.
This announcement reinforces Oceanwide Expeditions’ proactive design approach and its leadership in industry development and fleet evolution. When launched in 2019, the m/v Hondius was the first Polar Class 6 small expedition vessel, built from the ground up specifically for this type of voyage. More recently, the company has invested significantly in technical and visual enhancements to its existing fleet, in line with IAATO and AECO frameworks, as well as other environmental initiatives and regulations.

More details about both vessels, including their names, shipyards and specific design features, will be released as the construction project progresses.
