Starting in January 2027, the International Association of Ports and Harbors' (IAPH) Environmental Port Index (EPI) and Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will operate as complementary modules under the IAPH umbrella, thanks to an agreement signed between EPI and OceanScore, the administrator of the ESI. This combination will offer ports and shipping lines a more consistent way to measure and reward cleaner shipping through OceanScore's shared, scalable, and common technology platform.
The framework is structured around an operational agreement between EPI and OceanScore, and a cooperation agreement between EPI and IAPH. “This agreement brings together two complementary approaches and creates a stronger foundation for environmental incentives linked to ports worldwide,” says Patrick Verhoeven, Director General of IAPH.
The ESI reflects a vessel's overall environmental profile, while the EPI uses real-time operational data to measure its performance during each port call. Together, both modules will offer ports a broader basis for developing environmental incentive systems and provide shipping companies with a more consistent information framework.
“Integrating this methodology into a global framework will allow ports and shipping companies to have a common and unified solution to reward better environmental performance,” says Even Husby, CEO of EPI.
