The Ripple Report, an independent study on the economic impact of Hurtigruten, highlights that Hurtigruten's iconic coastal voyages generate an economic boost of more than 200 million euros annually for Norwegian communities.
The analysis, prepared by Menon Economics, estimates that Hurtigruten and its passengers generate 2.6 billion Norwegian kroner (about 219 million euros) in economic value through the purchase of goods and services along the coast.
In 2024, nearly 200,000 travelers journeyed along the coastal route with the company, generating 684,000 overnight stays and more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Hurtigruten has long been an integral part of Norway's national infrastructure, offering year-round sailings for local travelers, cargo, and international tourists since 1893. While many destinations are restricting visitor numbers or limiting cruise ship arrivals, Hurtigruten's smaller ships, each carrying around 500 passengers, distribute travelers across 34 coastal ports, some of which have only a few hundred inhabitants. This approach ensures that tourism revenue flows directly into the local economy.
“Tourism must be more than just enjoying scenery; it must create value, jobs, and a positive impact on the communities it touches,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten. “For more than 130 years, we have been a lifeline for Norway’s coastal communities. Our approach demonstrates that travel, and especially the cruise industry, can be a force for good when managed responsibly and with communities at its heart.”
In 2026, the airline will expand its Open Village program to its entire Signature fleet, offering exclusive community-led visits to remote villages such as Træna, Bessaker, and Sæbø between May and September. These experiences will allow passengers to enjoy local traditions, homemade cuisine, and cultural activities at no extra cost.
Since 1893, Hurtigruten has connected Norway's coastal communities, combining transport, trade, and tourism with a strong commitment to sustainability and local development. Today, the company upholds that legacy by offering authentic experiences that promote responsible tourism, respect for the environment, and benefits host communities.
