The onshore power supply system (OPS) will be operational in Narvik by the end of 2026

The Port of Narvik has confirmed the upcoming launch of its shore power supply facility (OPS), which will be operational in the third quarter of 2026. This milestone marks a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for maritime operations in Northern Norway.

The onshore power supply system (OPS) will be operational in Narvik by the end of 2026“This is a transformative initiative for both the port and the city,” said Børge Edvardsen Klingan, director of the Port of Narvik Havn. “By providing shore power, we are not only improving air quality and reducing noise, but also supporting the global transition to low-emission shipping.”

The new facility will allow cruise ships to connect to the local power grid while docked, thus reducing emissions and noise pollution in the port area.

Developed in collaboration with Plug Narvik and with a total investment of around 8 million euros, the project reflects Narvik's commitment to environmental innovation and regional cooperation.

The facility will include both high- and low-voltage systems, enabling it to serve a wide variety of cruise ships. It is designed to power one ship at a time and is expected to provide more than 2 million kWh annually, potentially reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 0.8 kg per kWh supplied.

Narvik's onshore power supply initiative is part of a broader strategy to position the port as a hub for sustainable energy and transport.

“We are building the necessary infrastructure for a cleaner future,” said Maria Bos, CEO of Plug Nord.

The onshore power supply facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026, in line with Norway's national targets to reduce domestic shipping emissions by 50% by 2030.
