HX Expeditions presents two new silent science boats, powered by electricity and designed to minimize underwater noise pollution in polar regions.
The two new boats, model MK 5, are fully electric and are equipped with the RAD 40 propulsion system from RAD Propulsion, considered one of the most advanced marine electric motors on the market.
These innovative boats will be incorporated into two of HX Expeditions' ships, the MS Fram and the MS Fridtjof Nansen (the latter with a hybrid battery), which operate in the Arctic and Antarctic. Their use will be primarily for crew scientific missions, guest scientific excursions, and research by visiting scientists.
As part of HX's commitment to scientific integrity, environmental protection, and responsible exploration, the introduction of these Zodiac-type electric boats represents a major step towards phasing out traditional fossil fuel-based engines.
These vessels allow for observations to be made in absolute silence in remote locations such as Antarctica, offering scientists, expedition teams and travelers the opportunity to observe marine life without disturbing it.
“Noise pollution is one of the most underestimated environmental impacts in polar regions,” explained Dr. Verena Meraldi, Chief Scientist at HX Expeditions. “For marine wildlife—especially whales—noise can mean the difference between thriving and suffering. With these quiet vessels, complementing our hybrid electric ships, we not only enhance the scientific and traveler experience, but also significantly reduce our environmental footprint in the ecosystems that need it most.”
Dr. Ari Friedlaender, a renowned marine scientist and longtime HX collaborator, added: “Conducting research from HX’s new electric Zodiacs will transform how we study whales in Antarctica. The absence of noise compared to traditional engines allows us to approach the animals without disturbing them, resulting in more natural observations. It’s a revolutionary change for science in these remote environments.”
Designed under the regulations of the IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators), the new vessels meet all safety and environmental sustainability standards, marking an important step towards a quieter and more responsible future of exploration.
Towards a fully electric fleet
“These boats are equipped to transport small groups of visiting scientists, members of our scientific team, and guests participating in biodiversity studies and marine wildlife observation, now with a fraction of the usual noise interference,” said Iain McNeill, Director of Operations for HX Expeditions. “This is just the beginning of a fleet-wide transformation. Our long-term goal is to completely replace combustion-engine Zodiacs with clean, electric alternatives across the entire HX fleet.”
