Oceanwide Expeditions has completed two major maintenance and modernization projects on the m/v Ortelius, improving its operating speed and fuel efficiency. The installation of new propeller blades and the sandblasting of the hull are part of an ongoing investment in the expedition fleet within a broader sustainability and ESG strategy.
During the dry dock period in September 2025, Dutch Propeller Repairs BV (DPR) manufactured and installed four new bronze propeller blades, replacing the previous stainless steel ones that had been in use for several decades. This planned work aims to improve the vessel's propulsion. Initial reports from the transition voyage to Puerto Madryn, Argentina, ahead of the 2025/2026 Antarctic season, already show greater speed stability.
The installation of the new propellers complements another significant project carried out during the dry dock in May 2025, when the Ortelius 's hull was sandblasted , removing accumulated layers of paint and resulting in a smoother, more uniform surface. This process has increased fuel efficiency by reducing hull drag, thus contributing to lower operating emissions.

These upgrades enhance the polar capabilities of the Ortelius, an ice-strengthened expedition vessel renowned in the industry for its ability to operate in the world's most extreme environments. Originally built as a scientific research vessel, the Ortelius is perfectly suited to navigate a wide variety of ice conditions.
With a capacity for 108 passengers, it offers a robust platform for expedition activities both on and off the ship, including remote and adventure itineraries such as voyages to the Weddell Sea and routes to the Southernmost Reach of Antarctica. The vessel can carry helicopters and offers 360° panoramic views, ideal for observing the far reaches of the world.
Both projects were completed at Shipyard Reimerswaal, a long-standing partner of Oceanwide Expeditions, which performs maintenance, replenishment and dry docking for the company's fleet twice a year.
