Ports of Madeira confirms that the number of cruise ships staying overnight in the ports of Funchal and Porto Santo increased by 39.35% in the 2024/25 season (September 1 to May 31) compared to the same period of the previous year. The total number of overnight calls rose from 61 to 85. The number of passengers also increased by 28%, from 105,251 to 134,782, while the number of crew members remained stable at 37,261.
Data from the Madeira Ports Administration (APRAM, SA) confirm the attractiveness of the region's port infrastructure for shipping companies and align with the strategy defined by the Regional Secretariat of Economy for the sector.
According to Paula Cabaço, president of the Board of Directors of APRAM, this growth has a direct impact on the regional economy:
“Ships that stay overnight in the port generate more revenue, stimulate sectors such as restaurants, retail, culture and leisure, and allow passengers and crew to get to know Madeira better.”
In 2024, the cruise sector contributed 61.4 million euros to the regional economy.
Most of the overnight stays (69) were for one night, although there were also 15 stopovers of two nights and one of seven nights by the ship Ocean Explorer, flying the Madeira flag.
This performance reflects APRAM's efforts in promoting the region internationally, highlighting the unique characteristics of Madeira's ports—such as their proximity to the center of Funchal—and the excellence of their port services. The growing importance of overnight cruises has also been a topic of discussion at international industry forums, such as MedCruise and the International Cruise Summit, in which Madeira actively participates.
“Cruise tourism is experiencing one of its best periods, and Madeira has capitalized on this growth. Our goal is to continue strengthening this trend, for the benefit of both the city and the entire region,” adds Paula Cabaço.
In 2024, Madeira surpassed 700,000 passengers for the first time, closing the year with 728,604. The positive trend continued in 2025, with the best first quarter in its history: 266,964 passengers, 92,903 crew members and 105 port calls.
