AmaWaterways celebrated the official christening of the AmaMagdalena on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in Mompox, a UNESCO World Heritage city in Colombia. As the first luxury river cruise ship to sail the iconic Magdalena River, the AmaMagdalena represents a historic milestone, both for the company and for the development of sustainable tourism in the region.
The ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, including the Governor of the Department of Bolívar and the Mayor of Mompox, as well as national officials from the Ministries of Tourism, Transportation, and Defense, and representatives from ProColombia, Fontur, and Cormagdalena. Their attendance reflects the strong partnerships AmaWaterways has forged with the public and private sectors in Colombia over the past three years to bring this pioneering project to fruition. Held outdoors, the celebration also drew numerous local residents, who gathered along the riverbanks to witness this historic moment for their community.

The godmother of the AmaMagdalena was the renowned Colombian interior designer and businesswoman Marianna Schlegel Donado, born in Barranquilla, who played a key role in the ship's design. A former Carnival Queen of Barranquilla and the creative mind behind Casa Schlegel Donado, Marianna brought a unique elegance and local inspiration to the cabin design. Through her work, she has promoted Colombian design internationally and is a leading advocate for women entrepreneurship in the region.
“Being named godmother of the AmaMagdalena is an incredible honor—both as a designer and as a proud Colombian,” Schlegel commented. “This ship carries the soul of our country: its colors, its craftsmanship, its warmth. Watching it sail the Magdalena River fills me with pride, not only for what we have built together, but for the opportunity it provides to share the beauty of Colombia with the world.”
Accommodating only 60 guests, the AmaMagdalena was custom-designed in close collaboration with Colombian artisans and creators. Led by acclaimed architect Camilo Restrepo, the ship's creative design draws inspiration from the region's natural beauty and vibrant culture. The interiors blend comfort and authenticity, featuring handcrafted woodwork by Cartagena-based Ocean Projects and furnishings by Casa Schlegel Donado.
Onboard, guests enjoy an intimate and sophisticated experience with amenities such as a pool on the Sun Deck, a gym, a main restaurant serving locally inspired Latin American cuisine and Western dishes, as well as a specialty outdoor restaurant, the Bolivar Restaurant.
“The christening of the AmaMagdalena is the realization of a dream we’ve nurtured for many years. Being here today in Mompox, surrounded by our Colombian partners and the vibrant community that helped make this ship a reality, is deeply meaningful,” said Kristin Karst, co-founder and senior brand ambassador for AmaWaterways. “This ceremony not only celebrates a new ship, but also represents a major step forward for river cruising and cultural discovery, as well as for the incredible journeys that await us on this beautiful river.”
The ship offers two immersive seven-night itineraries—Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia—sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Excursions include a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, an exclusive jazz concert in Mompox, birdwatching expeditions, and a visit to Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. Optional pre- and post-cruise packages are also available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.
Later in 2025, AmaWaterways will expand its program in Colombia with the debut of a second ship, the AmaMelodia, thus reaffirming its commitment to the region.
