NAPA, a global provider of maritime software and data services, has announced the launch of NAPA Permit to Work to improve crew safety and efficiency when performing high-risk tasks on board.
The new software is currently being tested by Carnival Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages, and represents a radical change for seafarer safety by eliminating the risk factor associated with current paper-based processes and submissions.
NAPA Permit to Work will digitize the mandatory work permit process required for hazardous tasks on board ships, such as working at heights, hot work, or entering confined spaces. The software will save crews time and reduce the risk of incidents by automatically notifying all relevant departments and personnel with real-time status updates on ongoing work, especially high-risk tasks like tank cleaning.
NAPA Permit to Work will act as a comprehensive digital checklist to help seafarers ensure that no safety-critical steps are omitted. The system is designed so that no digital form will be accepted unless all required safety checks are completed before any work begins, significantly reducing the risk of oversight.
For ground crews, this data transparency provides better visibility across the entire fleet, including ongoing work and conditions, enabling a more proactive approach to safety, maintenance, and troubleshooting. From a passenger and customer perspective, this functionality also helps streamline and expedite maintenance tasks through real-time visibility and task prioritization.
