To make the necessary preparations and achieve the European Union's decarbonization goals for 2050, IG RiverCruise, in collaboration with the Geneva Graduate Institute, carried out a study on the state of onshore energy in Europe's inland ports.
The report was prepared in June 2024. According to the results, 58.7% of the main inland ports of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) are equipped with at least one shore power supply infrastructure (OPS) for river cruises.
In contrast, the number of interior ports of the transversal TEN-T network (ports not directly related to the TEN-T network but interconnected with it) equipped with OPS infrastructure is 36.7%.
IG RiverCruise stressed that the statistics only reflect the available data, as the results for all ports are not known.
The data collected has highlighted regional differences in the implementation of the Port State Control System (PSC) and the varying stages of infrastructure development in EU inland ports. This underscores the need to focus investments on regions that are lagging behind.
Furthermore, the study underlines the need to update the data periodically and to collaborate with port authorities to improve the accuracy and relevance of the results.
Looking ahead, the project aims to improve data collection from port operators and expand the dataset.
Subsequent phases will include presenting this information to stakeholders to encourage participation and inform about future investments under the European Cruise Investment Plan.
This initiative aims to advance the decarbonization of the river cruise sector and steer the industry towards sustainability.
