The Port of Galveston is making traffic improvements to manage growth

The Port of Galveston will launch several projects to improve traffic flow in and around its cruise terminals.

“We are taking the best practices from Cruise Terminal 10, which opened in November 2022, and incorporating them into terminals 25 and 28,” said Port of Galveston Wharves Director and CEO Rodger Rees.

“We will do the same when planning the Cruise Terminal 16 complex, which is scheduled to open by the end of 2025.”“.

To help solve the on-site parking problem and reduce traffic in Harborside, the port is expanding its Express Park and Walk lot adjacent to Terminals 25 and 28.

This will allow passengers to park and walk to their terminal instead of making two trips through Harborside if they are going to drop off luggage before parking and taking a shuttle bus to the terminal.

In addition, Terminal 16 will have a cruise ship parking lot and another surface parking lot, both on-site.

“At Terminals 25 and 28, we are removing old rail tracks and a fence to add traffic lanes on the south side of the terminal complex. We are also going to test a new traffic flow pattern to provide more queuing space for CT 25 and to move traffic more efficiently through the complex,” Rees said.

“The port is also working with cruise lines that transport food, beverages, and other supplies to find ways to better manage this traffic“.

The improvements to Cruise Terminal 16 will include a traffic impact analysis to determine how the increased number of vehicles might affect traffic flow in and around the terminal. Rees explained that, in addition to parking and waiting lanes, cruise ship traffic will be able to use the new internal port road west of the terminal.
