The port of Saint John, in New Brunswick, is preparing to welcome back the Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship ever to call there.
The Oasis first visited the port in 2022, but this time it will carry an additional 1,000 people, totaling around 8,000 (5,931 passengers and 2,130 crew members), marking a record visit for the port. This will almost double the population of the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula for a single day.
“Port Saint John is proud to welcome back Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas,” said Natalie Allaby, Port Saint John Cruise Development Manager. “Local businesses and residents can look forward to thousands of new visitors strolling through Saint John’s historic streets and experiencing all that the city has to offer until the ship’s departure at 6:45 p.m.”
According to the Port of Saint John, the cruise industry contributes more than $68 million annually to the economy of the city and southern New Brunswick. This includes direct spending by cruise lines, passengers, and crew in the Bay of Fundy region, as well as direct employment for New Brunswick residents.
2023 marks 34 years of cruise ship calls at the Port of Saint John. Throughout the six-month season, from May 7 to November 7, 86 calls are scheduled, bringing a total of nearly 200,000 passengers. Highlights of the season include 14 days with two ships, five days with three ships, and 10 inaugural calls.
