The Port of Barcelona announced a year ago that the cruise company Royal Caribbean would have its own managed terminal in the port, after the shipping company had expressed this intention.
On November 30, 2022, the Port's administrative council approved the call for a public tender for the construction and operation of this terminal, which would be located on the Adossat dock, according to the protocol signed in 2018 with the city council.
The Royal Caribbean group was the first to show interest in the terminal, and later the shipping companies Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises and Virgin Cruises presented their joint proposal.
The port issued a statement to international bidders announcing that the applicant for the concession was a company from the Royal Caribbean group.
However, Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Virgin Cruises filed an appeal in February with the Supreme Court of Justice of Catalonia against this tender, which was accepted for review last month. Along with the appeal, the three cruise lines also requested a suspension of the tender, although these precautionary measures are still pending a decision.
Thus, last Friday, the Port of Barcelona suspended the tender for terminal G: “The Board of Directors of the Port of Barcelona has agreed to withdraw the tender called for the G Cruise terminal after an internal analysis carried out based on the consultations directed by the companies interested in the tender.”.
