The MSC Foundation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have announced a new partnership to conserve and restore threatened coral reefs.
The support of the MSC Foundation will allow the completion of the global assessment of the world's coral species, included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™.
The project will include identifying the most threatened coral species and reef areas; prioritizing conservation and restoration actions based on the threats they face; and preparing reports on the contribution of conserving these ecosystems to achieving the goals of the United Nations Global Biodiversity Framework.

This partnership will allow us to complete new assessments and ensure that the world has the information needed to protect corals and the livelihoods of the more than 500 million people who depend on them,” said Razan Al Mubarak, President of the IUCN.
Pierfrancesco Vago, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the MSC Foundation and CEO of the MSC Group's Cruise Division, commented that, “As stewards of our planet, we have a responsibility to protect its precious ecosystems. Our new partnership with the IUCN is a commitment to conserve and restore threatened coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass meadows. ”
The partnership will also contribute to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
