The Arvia was officially christened by artist Nicole Scherzinger in a beachside ceremony that was broadcast live on YouTube.

With the well-known words "I name this ship Arvia, may God bless it and all who sail on it," the bottle, containing 15 liters of Mount Gay Black Barrel, was released.

P&O Cruises President Paul Ludlow stated: “Our naming ceremony in Barbados is a world first, and that’s why it had to be with rum, as rum is the essence of Barbados. So, the world’s oldest ocean cruise line, simply combined with the world’s oldest rum distillery, along with what we believe to be the world’s largest bottle of rum. Mount Gay has a long and distinguished history and a connection to the sea—it’s a perfect match.”.

“Sailors have always believed that breaking a bottle to christen a ship brought luck and good fortune for all the voyages ahead. Traditionally, spirits were used for this ceremony, but in recent years champagne has been used instead. We are delighted to partner with Mount Gay and would be proud to have a replica of the bottle remain with us on board the Arvia as we sail around the world, as a memento of this very special day.”.

Mount Gay's Managing Director, Antoine Couvreur, stated: “Mount Gay has a long and storied history with seafaring. At the heart of this history lies Barbados, the birthplace of rum. Since 1703, honoring our authentic heritage has made Mount Gay the drink of choice for sailors and the maritime industry as a whole.
We are delighted to partner with P&O Cruises for this historic celebration as we mark our 320th anniversary this year.”

The Mount Gay Black Barrel bottle used for Arvia's christening is a Demi John, specially made for the occasion. This type of bottle has been traditionally used since the 18th century to store and transport rum.

Arvia's christening party was hosted by DJs Trevor Nelson and Sara Cox, and featured an exclusive performance by Olly Murs, a concert by the BBC rock band, as well as a spectacular grand finale by the ship's godmother and new partner Nicole Scherzinger.
