Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. enters the cruise industry with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. is entering the cruise industry with the construction of a 190-meter “yacht” capable of accommodating 298 passengers in 149 balcony suites. Created by Ritz-Carlton and maritime experts Douglas Prothero and Lars Clasen, in collaboration with funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection aims to provide luxury service under a long-term operating agreement.

The company plans to build three luxury cruise yachts, with the first one set to sail in the fourth quarter of 2019. The European shipyard will be announced soon, and the Spanish shipyard Astillero Barreras is among the candidates.

This project distinguishes Ritz-Carlton as the only provider of luxury accommodations both on land and at sea. “The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will have a distinctive personality, and its ships will stand out in some of the world’s most glamorous ports,” according to Herve Humler, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. “This unique combination of yachting and cruising will usher in a new form of luxury travel for guests who wish to discover the world in a relaxed, elegant, and comfortable environment with the highest level of personalized service.”.

The first cruise will offer seven- to ten-day itineraries through the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Planned stops include ports such as Capri, Portofino, St. Barthélemy, and Cartagena de Indias in Colombia, with a relaxed pace that includes overnight stays.

The modern yacht and its interior finishes will be designed jointly by The Ritz-Carlton and Tillberg Design of Sweden. In addition to balcony suites, the vessel will feature two 138-square-meter duplex penthouse suites and will include a restaurant by Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Wolfsburg; a Ritz-Carlton Spa; and a Panorama Lounge and wine bar. Furthermore, the yacht will offer experiences in collaboration with local chefs, musicians, and artists, allowing travelers to delve deeper into the destinations.

“The Ritz-Carlton is known for its legendary service and high standards,” commented Prothero, co-CEO of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. “We are delighted to collaborate with The Ritz-Carlton and offer the most exclusive yachting experience,” added Lars Clasen, co-CEO of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.
