Pandaw Cruises will return to sailing the Irrawaddy Delta in Myanmar this November, resuming one of its expedition routes six years after its last operation in the region. The river cruise company has scheduled a 10-night itinerary departing from and returning to Yangon, which will allow passengers to discover the delta's extensive network of canals and waterways, its riverside towns, markets, and natural areas.
The return to this area will initially be led by the RV Kanee Pandaw and, starting in December, by the RV Kha Byoo Pandaw. Both ships sailed last month from Bagan to Yangon, where they underwent dry dock work and the corresponding inspections. Both vessels now have the necessary permits to operate in the Irrawaddy Delta.
The route offers an introduction to one of Myanmar's lesser-known regions, following its numerous canals and rivers and focusing on the daily lives of the communities that inhabit their banks. The journey combines small riverine towns, old settlements with colonial heritage, local markets, and birdwatching in the delta's diverse ecosystems.
The itinerary also includes time to explore Yangon, the country's former capital and one of the main gateways to the region. Planned visits include some of its most iconic landmarks, such as the Shwedagon Pagoda and the National Museum, before setting sail for the delta.
The return to one of Asia's great river regions
The Irrawaddy Delta, historically known as the "breadbasket of Asia," covers a vast area crisscrossed by a complex network of waterways. Navigating its canals offers a glimpse into a different side of Myanmar, far removed from the main tourist routes and closely linked to agricultural and riverine activity.
Pandaw Cruises suspended its large-scale operations in Myanmar after the 2021 military coup. With the resumption of this route, the company is once again focusing on one of the river territories that are part of its history and its exploration offering in Myanmar, opting once more for a leisurely cruise that allows passengers to get closer to the landscapes, communities, and local life of the Irrawaddy Delta.
