NYK Line has confirmed the construction of a new luxury cruise ship to replace the iconic Asuka II, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the growth of cruise tourism in Japan and consolidating the Asuka brand as a benchmark in the country's premium segment.
The planned investment will exceed $600 million and will allow the company to expand its fleet of luxury cruise ships, which recently began a new phase with the addition of the Asuka III, built by Meyer Werft and delivered in 2025.
The new ship will take over from the Asuka II, NYK Cruises' flagship since 2006 and considered a cornerstone of the modern cruise industry in Japan. Originally built in 1990 for Crystal Cruises at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard, the ship was incorporated into the Asuka Cruises fleet after extensive refurbishment and has since carried thousands of passengers on luxury itineraries throughout Asia and other international destinations.
With a gross tonnage of 50,412 and a capacity for 940 passengers, the Asuka II remains one of the most recognized ships in the Japanese market. However, after nearly two decades of service with NYK and more than 35 years since its construction, its propulsion systems and other technical components are beginning to show signs of obsolescence, prompting the decision to develop a next-generation replacement.
Although the shipping company has not yet revealed the technical characteristics, capacity or dimensions of the future vessel, it has confirmed that it will operate alongside the Asuka III, allowing it to expand its high-end cruise offerings and respond to the growing interest in this type of experience among both Japanese and international audiences.
The order for the new ship is not expected to be formalized before April 2028, and both the shipyard to build it and the final specifications will be decided at a later stage of the project.
The addition of the new ship will allow the Asuka brand to continue operating, while increasing the company's operational capacity and improving its competitiveness within the domestic luxury cruise market.
The announcement represents one of the largest investments recently made in the Japanese cruise industry and reflects NYK Line's confidence in the sustained growth of maritime tourism, both in the domestic and international markets.
The company is also involved in other strategic projects for the sector. Among these is its collaboration with Oriental Land, operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, to develop Disney's future cruise division in Japan. As part of this agreement, Oriental Land is building a 140,000-ton Wish-class ship, scheduled for delivery by Meyer Werft by the end of 2028. NYK will provide consulting, technical, and operational management services to this new company.
With this strategy, NYK Line reaffirms its commitment to consolidating a modern fleet capable of responding to the growing demand for luxury cruises, while maintaining the excellence of service that has characterized the Asuka brand for decades.
