Emerald Cruises & Tours celebrates the christening of the Emerald Astra

Emerald Cruises & Tours celebrated the official christening ceremony of the Emerald Astra on May 31st in Amsterdam, the newest addition to its European fleet of ten river ships, marking an important milestone for the company in its expansion along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.

Emerald Cruises & Tours celebrates the christening of the Emerald AstraAt the center of the celebration was Toni Lanotte-Day, an American travel agent, businesswoman and one of Scenic Group's top salespeople worldwide, whose appointment as godmother reflects the growing role of travel agents in the evolution of luxury travel brands.

As godmother of the ship, Lanotte-Day described her role as both symbolic and representative of the entire U.S. travel advisor community.

“In maritime tradition, being a godmother represents luck, protection, and prosperous voyages. But I also believe I represent the travel agents who believe in this product and help make it a reality for their clients,” she stated.

For Lanotte-Day, her connection to Emerald Cruises isn't based on a title, but on lived experiences. From accompanying cruises during tulip season in the Netherlands, where guests decorated wooden clogs alongside local artisans, to organizing sunrise arrivals in Venice aboard Emerald Cruises yachts, with Bellinis served on deck as the city appeared on the horizon, her relationship with the brand has been built through the experiences it seeks to offer its passengers.

The launch of the Emerald Astra also reflects this evolution. With an elegant exterior design and bright, contemporary interiors inspired by Scenic Group's own shipbuilding division, MKM Yachts, the new ship introduces a design philosophy intended to convey what Lanotte-Day describes as "a sense of relaxed joy" from the moment guests board.

“It’s designed for travelers who want to truly experience a destination, whether through history, culture, or active exploration, but who at the same time want to return to a space that feels like home,” he added.

Glen Moroney, founder and president of Scenic Group, stated: “The Emerald Astra reflects our vision for the global growth of the Emerald Cruises brand: a contemporary, immersive offering closely connected to the destinations we visit. Appointing Toni as godmother recognizes the fundamental role travel agents have played in building Scenic Group and the role they will continue to play in our future.”.

As Emerald Cruises continues to expand its fleet, the company is already preparing the addition of the Emerald Lumi, which will begin sailing on the Seine in 2027.
