Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines tests AI technology to reduce food waste

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has partnered with Swiss company KITRO to test AI-powered food waste monitoring devices on board its flagship ship, Bolette, with the aim of reducing waste and improving operational efficiency.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines tests AI technology to reduce food wasteThis six-month pilot project represents a significant step in transforming food waste management on board and is part of the shipping company's broader commitment to optimize its operations and reduce its environmental impact.

The program includes the installation of five KITRO devices at key points in the ship's kitchens, where they will automatically record and analyze food waste. Thanks to advanced image recognition technology, the system captures and identifies discarded food in real time, collecting data such as weight, category, and time of production, providing a detailed view of where and why waste is generated.

All this information is integrated into an intuitive analysis panel, which allows both onboard teams and KITRO specialists to monitor trends, detect savings opportunities, and apply targeted improvements.

Dominic Simpson, Head of Sustainability at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We are delighted to launch this trial period. Thanks to KITRO’s innovative AI technology and expert support, we will be able to better understand food waste on board and implement significant changes where they are most needed. This is an important step in our commitment to improving efficiency and investing in fleet-wide upgrades that support our long-term sustainability goals.”.

The shipping company will use the results of this pilot project to assess the possible implementation of this technology across the rest of its fleet, thus reinforcing its commitment to more sustainable operations and the development of a more responsible cruise industry.
