Disney Cruise Line has named Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr., known worldwide for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the official godfather of the company's newest and largest ship, Disney Adventure.
The announcement links one of the most iconic figures in the Marvel universe with the innovative ship, reinforcing Disney Cruise Line's commitment to integrating its major film franchises into the onboard experience.
In a video released alongside the news, Downey expressed that taking on this role is "an honor and a privilege," and humorously noted that the company's biggest ship requires "a massive, gigantic blessing to match.".
“Our newest ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godfather of Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company.
The Disney Adventure has been conceived around seven themed areas, several of which incorporate experiences from the Marvel universe.
At Marvel Landing, located on the upper decks, the ship will feature Ironcycle Test Run, described as the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind at sea.
Additionally, the Disney Imagination Garden outdoor space will host the live show “Avengers Assemble!”, which will combine acrobatics and special effects in a production starring Marvel heroes and villains.
For younger guests, the Marvel WEB Workshop, located inside Disney's Oceaneer Club, will offer training simulations and interactive activities inspired by Avengers technology.
Disney Cruise Line maintains the tradition of appointing figures closely associated with the company's creative universe as godparents for its ships. The godparent fulfills the symbolic role of blessing the vessel during its official christening ceremony.
The choice of Robert Downey Jr. also reflects the growing integration of film franchises into the cruise industry, especially in the family segment, where cruise lines compete through themed experiences and exclusive offerings based on major entertainment brands.
The Disney Adventure is currently undergoing repositioning after departing from Germany and is scheduled to arrive in Singapore after approximately two months at sea. The Adventure's inaugural voyage from Singapore will begin on March 10, 2026, launching a schedule of three- and four-night nonstop itineraries.
