MSC Cruises has announced a landmark partnership with marine conservation organization ORCA, which will feature ORCA's first-ever Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) on board a ship during the cruise line's inaugural Alaskan season in the summer of 2026. This science-based initiative reinforces MSC Cruises' commitment to turning environmental responsibility into action as it expands its operations and promotes industry-wide standards.
As part of the partnership, an ORCA MMO will sail aboard MSC Poesia for one month during peak whale season, from late July to late August 2026, one of the periods with the highest whale populations in Alaskan waters. This extended observation period allows for the collection of statistically significant data on whales' behavioral responses to the presence and activity of ships.
ORCA's Marine Mammal Observatory (MMO) will also use this time to study whale behavior and collect data, particularly their reaction to the presence of cruise ships. This information will be shared with the scientific community and used to deliver "whale avoidance" training, which ORCA provides to crews of numerous cruise lines and shipping companies, including MSC Cruises.
Leveraging ORCA's expertise in ethical and responsible whale watching, the organization will offer support and guidance on Alaskan experiences, including reviews of current whale watching tours.
ORCA will help identify operators to implement best practices and will collaborate throughout the season to conduct ongoing assessments, collecting near real-time quantitative information to support high standards for sustainable wildlife tourism.
Passenger education is another key pillar of the collaboration. During each Alaskan itinerary, ORCA's Marine Management Office (MMO) will host an onboard educational session for passengers, highlighting the ongoing research and the potential positive impact of the collaboration. Passengers will also be introduced to ORCA's citizen science initiatives, offering them an opportunity to become more involved with Alaska's marine environment.

This agreement supports MSC Cruises’ inaugural Alaska season in summer 2026, with the newly refurbished MSC Poesia sailing seven-night itineraries from Seattle, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s global rollout. Building on this momentum, MSC Cruises recently opened sales for its second Alaska season in summer 2027, reflecting strong demand for the destination and the company’s long-term commitment to operating responsibly in the region.
This agreement was officially launched at CLIA in Archorage, Alaska, where industry and marine conservation leaders meet to discuss sustainable cruise ship operations.
