Aurora Expeditions launches a new ocean regeneration program that replaces carbon offsetting

Aurora Expeditions is making a significant change in its sustainability strategy, moving away from traditional carbon offsetting to adopt a circular impact model focused on decarbonization and regeneration.

Aurora Expeditions launches a new ocean regeneration program that replaces carbon offsettingInstead of simply offsetting emissions after they occur, this new approach focuses on reducing emissions at the source through smarter operations, cleaner technologies, and responsible decisions. Examples include ships specifically designed to reduce environmental impact, decrease fuel consumption, and increase testing of biofuels. It also involves regenerating the environments and communities with which the company interacts by supporting conservation, restoration, science, and circular practices that give back more than they take.

“This new model goes beyond neutralizing damage: it focuses on actively creating positive environmental and social outcomes,” explained Sasha Buch, sustainability manager at Aurora Expeditions.

Ocean Regeneration Program

The Ocean Regeneration initiative is designed to actively restore marine ecosystems while removing harmful waste.

For every passenger who joins an expedition, Aurora Expeditions will fund the planting of a marine life unit and the removal of one kilogram of waste that would otherwise end up in the ocean.

According to projections for 2026, Aurora will support the planting of more than 7,000 units of seaweed, seagrass and corals, in addition to preventing more than 7,000 kilograms of waste from reaching the sea.

These actions are carried out in collaboration with global organizations such as Seatrees, Veritree and CleanHub, directly connecting expeditions with a positive impact on the destinations Aurora visits: kelp forests in Canada and Portugal; seagrass meadows in Spain; coral restoration in Indonesia and Costa Rica; plastic waste recovery in Indonesia's Coral Triangle and other coastal communities.

“The partners we chose for this program work directly with local communities. We value the knowledge they bring and want to ensure both the economic prosperity of these communities and long-term environmental protection,” Buch said.
“The locations we selected complement our sustainable partnerships in the polar regions, as Aurora expands from the polar to the global.”

Aurora Expeditions is also a Certified B Corporation™, meaning it meets high, verified standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. In addition to its regenerative partnerships, its expedition ships—the MV Greg Mortimer, MV Sylvia Earle, and the upcoming MV Douglas Mawson—feature the innovative Ulstein X-BOW® design, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions. They also incorporate virtual anchoring to prevent damage to the seabed and operate without single-use plastics.

By aligning each trip with a measurable positive impact, Aurora Expeditions continues to lead the industry in redefining sustainable travel, turning once-in-a-lifetime experiences into opportunities to regenerate the planet's vital systems.
