This Antarctic season, HX Expeditions, the world’s oldest expedition cruise company, is launching its most extensive and varied Antarctic kayaking and camping program ever. Starting in October 2025, HX will offer more guests the opportunity to kayak and camp in Antarctica than ever before—with a 188% increase in kayaking capacity and double the number of campsites (up to 60 guests per night), all while maintaining the highest environmental protection standards and operating fully within the guidelines of IAATO, of which HX is a founding member.
“We’re not just adding more rooms, we’re reinventing how guests experience Antarctica,” said Karin Strand, Vice President of Expedition Development, who has led more than 150 expeditions to Antarctica and designed this new program. With over 20 years of experience programming Antarctic voyages, HX continues to lead the industry in both scale and innovation.
“With greater kayaking and camping capacity, plus more flexibility and access, we’re opening up the polar regions to more adventurers than ever before. It’s about making these once-in-a-lifetime moments available to everyone on board, in small, intimate, and responsible groups. Whether you’re gliding between icebergs in a kayak or sleeping under the stars, we’re here to help you write your own Antarctic story. And, most importantly, all experiences are designed in harmony with nature and in strict compliance with the environmental regulations governing human activity in Antarctica.”
New developments for the 2025/26 season in Antarctica
- 188% increase in kayak capacity across the entire HX fleet
- Doubled camp capacity: up to 60 guests per night
- Expanded access for solo travelers, no need for a kayaking or camping buddy
- New “Discovery Kayaks” – inflatable, single, self-guided and with no language requirement.
- New camping in “bivac bags” – a light, low-impact overnight experience under the stars, the closest thing to being a real explorer.
- Expanded activity mix – now includes two styles of kayaking, two styles of camping, snowshoeing, polar bathing and extended hikes (subject to availability, number of passengers and boat capacity).
HX's enhanced offering isn't just about quantity: it's about smarter, more inclusive, and more diverse adventures. From leisurely solo outings to more technical guided excursions, HX offers seven distinct activity options across its fleet: two styles of kayaking, two types of camping, snowshoeing, polar bathing, and extended hikes.
For the 2025/2026 season, all kayak and camping bookings will be managed onboard by the expedition team, allowing for real-time flexibility based on weather and guest preferences. An advance booking system is being developed for future seasons. All activities are subject to weather conditions.
“Experiencing Antarctica must come with responsibility,” Strand concludes. “Every step we take is guided by the principles of sustainable tourism. We operate within the framework of IAATO guidelines to ensure our presence leaves no trace—minimizing our impact, respecting wildlife, and preserving the pristine beauty of the polar environment for future generations.”
HX is proud to now offer its largest and most diverse kayaking and camping program in Antarctica. With new equipment, enhanced programming, and smarter operations, the brand continues to lead the industry not only in scale, but also in ambition and innovation.
