The Port of Barcelona has awarded the project to the Danish company PowerCon for €12,225,000. The project kickoff meeting included a visit to MSC's new terminal, which has already been designed to be equipped with an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system.

The Port of Barcelona and the Danish company PowerCon A/S have begun work on the construction project for the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the MSC terminal on the Adossat dock, the first cruise terminal in the Port of Barcelona. PowerCon has been awarded the contract for this project, which will also include the necessary civil works and the deployment of cabling to the distribution center from which the power supply will be managed.
Last week, the first meeting was held between the team from the Shorepower department of the Port of Barcelona, headed by its boss, Ana Arévalo, and the PowerCon team, led by Peter Castberg Knudsen, Team Manager and founding partner of the company.
During the meeting, the Port of Barcelona and PowerCon teams laid the groundwork for the execution of the construction project, in accordance with the tender specifications, and visited the MSC terminal, where they met with the terminal director, Sandra Yunta. The terminal, inaugurated this year, was built with sustainability as a priority and is designed to be equipped with an Operations Planning System (OPS).
Ana Arévalo explains that “the MSC terminal's operating station is scheduled to become operational in 2027, at the same time as the substation that will bring 100% renewable electricity to all the terminals. It will be a key year for the electrification of the Port of Barcelona's docks.”.
Nexigen
With planned global investments of nearly €200 million, the Nexigen Plan has reached a key phase this year with the commissioning of the two OPS systems located at the BEST and Grimaldi Terminal Barcelona terminals. These OPS systems, currently in the pilot phase, already allow container ships arriving at BEST to connect with the ferries that connect Barcelona and Palma daily, reducing emissions and providing essential experience and knowledge for the construction of future OPS systems.
At this stage, the project continues to advance with the construction of the new Port substation and the deployment of a new medium voltage network that will allow energy to reach all the docks where OPS systems will be installed.
