MSC Cruises has opened a new cruise terminal at the Port of Miami. The opening ceremony took place on April 5, marking the debut of what is now the world's largest cruise terminal.
The inauguration was attended by regional government leaders, MSC Cruises and Fincantieri, including Levine Cava, mayor of Miami-Dade County, and Edoardo Rixi, Italy's deputy minister of infrastructure and transport, along with Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Group's cruise division, and Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and managing director of Fincantieri.
“Our new cruise terminal is the most advanced in the world, designed to offer a seamless experience for our guests before and after their cruise, setting a new standard for the industry,” said Vago. “This incredible state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance the travel experience but also generate significant economic benefits for the region, creating jobs and fostering local economic growth.”
The new MSC Miami Cruise Terminal covers more than 45,700 square meters and is capable of processing up to 36,000 passengers per day, with the capacity to receive three ships simultaneously.
The terminal is equipped with ship-to-shore electrical connectivity, allowing vessels to shut down their engines and reduce emissions while docked. It also features waste management systems, water recycling, and the use of sustainable materials. The check-in and security process at the terminal includes biometric facial recognition podiums and checkpoint lanes to expedite boarding.
The terminal features waiting areas, an exclusive lounge for MSC Yacht Club guests, and biometric electronic gates for the final stage of the boarding process. For disembarking passengers, a baggage handling system developed by Leonardo will process their luggage. As part of Miami-Dade County’s “Art in Public Places” program, seven works of art will be installed throughout the terminal.
The terminal was developed in collaboration with PortMiami and Miami-Dade County, designed by Arquitectonica and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure.
MSC Cruises will have a total of four ships operating from the new terminal by 2025, including its new flagship, MSC World America, which will be joined by ships from the MSC Group's luxury travel brand, Explora Journeys. Explora I will depart from the new terminal in November for Caribbean cruises.
