MSC Cruises successfully completed 44 shore power connections in 2023, according to the company's recent Sustainability Report.
By 2024, MSC aims for 220 connections, and several new ports are expected to offer shore power.
The technology will expand beyond Northern Europe and the Mediterranean and will also be available in North America.
MSC Cruises' new cruise terminal, scheduled to open this year, will be able to provide ships with electrical power on land.
According to the 2023 Sustainability Report, onshore electricity is an important part of the company's strategy to reduce SOx and NOx emissions.
The technology allows ships to turn off their engines while connected to the port's electrical grid, eliminating all emissions while docked.
“We continue to work closely with ports to support the necessary infrastructure investments, with commitments signed at several Baltic and Mediterranean ports to use onshore power facilities as soon as they become available,” the report explained.
The latest edition of the Cruise Industry News Global Cruise Index shows that 16 ships in MSC Cruises' fleet of 22 vessels can currently use electric power on land.
The report, recently released and offering crucial data on more than 550 ships, shows that the company's next ships, the MSC World America and the MSC World Asia, will also be equipped with this technology.
MSC's strategy also includes a focus on LNG. According to the company, the fuel emits 85 percent less NOx and 99 percent less SOx and particulate matter compared to conventional marine fuels.
