We went to Barcelona on the always beautiful day of Saint George, to officially name the majestic Sun Princess.
Yesterday we saw people of many nationalities on board, not only because the ship has been sailing regularly with passengers for weeks, but also because of the many guests who came to such a wonderful celebration.
Actress Hannah Waddingham served as godmother of the Sun Princess during a very elegant ceremony at the new Princess Arena where, together with the ship's captain, Craig Street, she pronounced the solemn words: “We christen this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.
We could see through the screens as the immense bottle of champagne crashed against the hull of the ship, wishing good luck to all the passengers and crew who will sail in the future.
The ceremony was elegant, as was Hannah Waddingham, who admitted to being very surprised when she was called and then very honored to join the list of such remarkable women who have served as godmothers at Princess, such as Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984); Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006); among others.
Also present were some of the original cast members of the series "The Love Boat": Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac), and Bernie Kopell (Doc). What memories!
The onboard party, with just the right number of people and the excellent gourmet food and drinks offered, was one of the best we have ever attended.
The Sun Princess
The new Sun Princess, a 177,882-ton ship with a capacity for 4,300 guests and a true marvel of engineering, officially began its inaugural cruise season on February 28, 2024, and will remain in the Mediterranean before debuting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, next October for its first season in the Caribbean.
This ship, which we were able to see in the shipyards before it was finished, incorporates many new features:
- The Dome, an innovative geodesic glazed structure on top of the ship inspired by the terraces of Santorini.
- The beautiful Princess Arena theatre where the celebration took place is architecturally and technically impressive and offers amazing and original productions.
- The company's largest casino, the two-story Lotus Spa, and an expanded shopping area with more than 200 premium brands, including several firsts at sea.
Many more accommodation options and over 1,500 cabins with balconies, plus a vast gastronomic offering with 30 welcoming restaurants and bars featuring an unprecedented collection of celebrity collaborators and gourmet ingredients.
Mundomar Cruceros, which markets Princess Cruises in Spain, has already commented that this year bookings with this company have skyrocketed and that this ship has marked a turning point.
