Costa Cruises has received the award for “Best improvement in diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace” from the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, currently held by Belgium.

This important D&I award is given to companies in the maritime and commercial sector that have distinguished themselves by promoting and consolidating gender equality and diversity in their organizations, integrating them into decision-making processes.
In particular, Costa Cruises was recognized for its transgender workplace policy, implemented to ensure that transgender people receive fair and equal treatment in the workplace, both on board ships and in land-based offices.
The award was presented in Brussels by Mr. Paul Van Tigchelt, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and the North Sea of the Kingdom of Belgium, to Stephane Codeluppi, Director of Development and Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at Costa Cruises, accompanied by Bernard Vanheule, Director of European Union Affairs at Costa & Carnival Corporation.
In the words of Stephane Codeluppi, Director of Development and DEI at Costa Cruises: “This recognition is further confirmation that a culture of diversity and inclusion is part of Costa Cruises’ DNA. Specifically, our transgender policy provides clear and concrete guidelines that help create a comfortable and inclusive work environment for transgender people.”
He added: “This type of initiative has positive effects both for employees, as it improves their well-being, and for the company, because it strengthens the sense of belonging, reputation, and the ability to attract new talent. Policies like ours can be useful in fostering broader change within the society in which we live, which motivates us to keep moving forward.”
For many years, Costa Cruises has been committed to promoting Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) within its organization, both onboard and ashore. Since 2015, the Italian company has followed a structured approach, thanks to the appointment of a Director of Diversity and Inclusion, whose role encompasses everything from evaluating internal policies and initiatives and implementing new actions, to monitoring and measuring progress.
Costa also collaborates with various external organizations to address diversity and inclusion issues and is committed to ensuring equal opportunities and preventing any form of discrimination. A culture of diversity and inclusion is also deeply integrated into the company's internal communications and talent acquisition process.
The D&I Awards were created by the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) Belgium with the support of WISTA International, the European Commission's Women in Transport – EU platform, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and numerous shipping stakeholders.
