The Port of Barcelona is promoting an agreement to reduce water supply to cruise ships

The Port of Barcelona is promoting an agreement with cruise companies operating in Barcelona so that, following the declaration of the drought emergency phase by the Generalitat of Catalonia, ships will only take on water at the port in cases of extreme need.

Therefore, the Port of Barcelona would only supply water to those vessels that can prove they do not have viable alternative supply options.

This is a measure promoted by the Port of Barcelona and its entire Port Community, which shows its sensitivity to the savings measures recommended by the competent institutions and which represents "a self-regulation that allows us to reduce our consumption," explains Lluís Salvadó, president of the Port of Barcelona.

The cruise sector is one of those that has most significantly reduced water intake in the Port of Barcelona in recent years, mainly due to the incorporation of water purification systems in most vessels, which allows them to generate their own water.

Thus, being self-sufficient, most cruise ship stops do not use the water service during their stay in the Port of Barcelona.

The result of this self-sufficiency is that cruise ships accounted for only 0.09% of the water consumption of the city of Barcelona in 2022.

Aware that vessels have alternative supply options in other ports along their routes, “the Port of Barcelona has decided to appeal to the sensitivity of cruise companies to minimize the supply of water at the Port, reminding them that the supply of water to ships is one of the commercial services contemplated in Chapter V (Commercial Services) of Title VI (Provision of Services) of the Consolidated Text of the Law of State Ports and Merchant Marine and that this Law determines that ports are obliged to provide water to all ships that request it,” adds Lluís Salvadó.
