Norwegian Cruise Line, the cruise company, will include more than 1,000 single cabins on its fleet of 19 ships, for those who travel alone.
Starting the week of October 2, 2023, the company will put on sale for the first time three new categories of single staterooms, including Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview and Solo Balcony for future departures beginning January 2, 2024.
“We strive to offer our guests a variety of options to create their dream vacation,” said David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Since we first launched our single staterooms in 2010 with the Norwegian Epic, they have been quite popular with solo travelers. We are continually listening to our guests to provide the experience they want. After recognizing the growing demand from people looking to travel alone, we have now expanded single staterooms across our entire fleet.”
Guests staying in the new solo cabin categories will also have access to the Studio Lounge, available on select ships and accessible only with a keycard. This lounge features a dedicated relaxation area, a bar stocked with beer and wine, and a variety of snacks served daily. In addition to their own lounge, solo cruisers can enjoy scheduled activities designed to foster connections with one another.
With the expansion of solo cabin categories from nine ships to the entire fleet of 19, solo cruisers have more opportunities to visit destinations such as Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand on ships that historically have not had this unique offering.
Studies
This change is in response to the recent surge in popularity of solo travel in the tourism sector, with a growing number of people choosing to travel the world alone.
According to a Travelport study, solo travel accounts for nearly 18% of global tourism bookings. More recently, Radical Storage reported a 267% increase in online searches for the term “solo travel” between December 2020 and April 2022. Additionally, from 2019 to 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line observed an increase in guests booking accommodations as single occupants in non-studio staterooms.
