MSC Cruises has published its 2022 Sustainability Report, highlighting the progress made in its sustainability practices throughout the year. The company's sustainability strategy is based on the materiality assessment carried out in 2019 and revised in 2021. This process has ensured that MSC Cruises' attention is focused on the issues of greatest importance to the company's external and internal stakeholders, and on those where their impact on the world means the company has a responsibility to act.

MSC Cruises' Sustainability Action Plan focuses on six priority lines of work, which coincide with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
MSC Cruises' Sustainability Advisory Board, chaired by Chief Executive Pierfrancesco Vago, is responsible for ensuring the continued relevance of the sustainability strategy and reviewing progress, guided and supported by the sustainability team.
Linden Coppell, Vice President of Sustainability at MSC Cruises, added: “To ensure the suitability and continued relevance of our sustainability strategy and our Sustainability Action Plan, we maintain an ongoing dialogue with our employees, passengers, and key external stakeholders.”
In 2022, progress was made in all areas of MSC Cruises' Sustainability Action Plan. Here are the highlights:
Planet – Transition to net zero emissions, improvement of local air quality and control of resource use and waste.
The company is actively accelerating efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. A momentous step in this crucial journey has been the launch of the LNG-powered ship, MSC World Europa, in 2022.
Location – Support sustainable destinations, develop terminals.
MSC Cruises ships allow passengers to visit some of the world's most beautiful destinations, and the company is committed to helping ensure they remain so by delivering positive social and economic outcomes to the local communities they visit. Investments in developing new, sustainable cruise terminals are creating jobs and attracting new visitors to these locations. MSC Cruises also actively supports destination management and continues to collaborate with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and other cruise lines to manage visitor numbers and support the sustainable tourism aspirations of the destinations it visits.
People – Supporting your people and the well-being of the crew.
MSC Cruises' number one priority is keeping passengers and crew safe and healthy. The company offers excellent healthcare on its ships. The crew plays a vital role in ensuring a successful passenger experience, and MSC Cruises understands the importance of supporting their well-being. Therefore, MSC Cruises provides all the training staff need to perform their jobs well and supports those with great potential who wish to develop their careers with the company.
Purchase – Environmentally responsible purchases.
Each year, the company has to purchase thousands of different items to carry out its operations, from engine parts and hand soap to crew uniforms, food, and beverages. The company aims to go beyond specific programs—such as eliminating single-use plastics on board—and change the mindset of the purchasing community so that every buying decision is made with the environment and worker well-being in mind.
