Cartagena will host on December 15, 2022, a conference in which top professionals from the cruise industry and recreational boating will try to shed light on the initiatives they are implementing in terms of sustainability and environmental care.
The event, developed by CruisesNews Media Group and AWP Services in collaboration with CLIA, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Isaac Peral Auditorium of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena – CIM Building, and is aimed at and open to tourism professionals, businesspeople, travel agencies, cruise lines, and the nautical industry, as well as media and the general public.
The cruise industry is a sector under constant media scrutiny, even though it is at the forefront of the maritime industry in the development and use of new technologies and fuels that reduce emissions into the atmosphere, and its sustainability programs reach levels rarely seen in other sectors.
The economic impact of this form of tourism on the region that receives it is substantial, since on average, each cruise passenger spends 660 euros in all the destinations they visit during a seven-day cruise, according to a study by the CLIA organization.
Similarly, recreational boating is rapidly adapting to an increasingly demanding environmental landscape. Spanish marinas and leisure boating place the Spanish coast among the most attractive and sustainable in Europe, with a significant local economic and social impact.
Both sectors are increasingly deepening their Corporate Social Responsibility policies, generating quality jobs with equal opportunities and diversity. Both cruise ships and yachts require supporting infrastructure in ports and marinas to meet the most advanced environmental and sustainability objectives. Therefore, the Port of Cartagena, with the support of Navantia Yachts and ASEAM, is the driving force behind this event, which will be attended by prominent executives from cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, and Silversea Cruises, as well as representatives from the Port of Barcelona, marinas, shipping agents, excursion companies like BC Tour, the nautical business association ANEN, and others. Yolanda Muñoz, President of the Cartagena Port Authority, will open the event, followed by Fernando Muñoz, Commercial Director of the Cartagena Port Authority. Next, Gerardo Vangioni will talk about the NGO Ships of Hope, followed by Alfredo Serrano, National Director of CLIA Spain, who will talk about the latest advances in sustainability in the cruise industry.
A round table with leading executives from the cruise sector, moderated by Virginia López Valiente, CEO of CruisesNews Media Group, will analyze the advances in sustainability, before giving way to a second part of the event focused on recreational boating with Carlos Sanlorenzo, Secretary General of the National Association of Nautical Companies who will comment on the general situation of the sector, followed by Pedro Rodríguez, head of Environment at Navantia Cartagena.
Next, a second panel discussion moderated by Eva Miquel Subías, partner at AWP Services, with executives from marinas, shipyards and other companies in the sector, will analyze the socio-economic impact and sustainability of recreational boating.
