Princess Cruises announces the expansion of MedallionPay, the payment experience that allows guests to use their Princess Medallion wearable device to shop, play games, eat and drink at different local businesses in various ports of call in the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera and all of Alaska, and in turn receive 7% cashback on these purchases on land as onboard credit during this first year of the service.
The MedallionPay option, previously exclusive to purchases made on board Princess MedallionClass ships, enhances the security and convenience of contactless payments in port. This allows passengers to use their Medallion to shop more securely at retailers displaying the MedallionPay Seal, without needing to carry their credit cards.
“The MedallionPay option offers the ultimate in payment convenience and security for guests, both onboard and now in the ports we visit, seamlessly combining the onboard and destination experience,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.
The MedallionPay option is currently available in St. Thomas, Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel, and Puerto Vallarta, with more destinations and merchants being added in the near future, including expansion to all Alaskan ports served by Princess ships. Among the featured merchants now accepting MedallionPay are more than 65 businesses, ranging from restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and jewelry stores to museums and tour operators. MedallionPay is available to all retailers, large and small, who are not required to pay any monthly or enrollment fees to participate in the program. No long-term contracts are required, and the software is free to use. Merchants simply pay a transaction fee that includes all credit card processing fees and can cancel the service at their discretion.
Passengers who make purchases with participating merchants enjoy convenience, security, and a 7% onboard credit on purchases when they link a credit card to a MedallionPay account, and even greater benefits when guests link their MedallionPay account to a cashback credit card.
“Being able to pay with my Medallion made shopping easier and having an associated discount is fantastic,” said Lori Woodbury, a Crown Princess passenger who tried MedallionPay during her trial in St. Thomas.
Furthermore, personal or credit card information is not stored on Medallion, exceeding the security levels used by financial institutions. When making a purchase at participating retailers in selected ports of call, the merchants securely confirm the transaction.
Princess has offered MedallionPay contactless payment for all onboard purchases in MedallionClass since the Princess MedallionClass Experience debuted in late 2017.
