CruiseCopenhagen is encouraging cruise lines to visit the Danish capital during the off-season. For the first time, Copenhagen expects to receive cruise ship calls every month in 2022, which will enhance the experience for both cruise lines and passengers.
Copenhagen isn't just a wonderful city during the summer; it's also beautiful in the autumn and winter. Taking a cruise during the off-season is beneficial for both cruise lines and passengers. This is the message of CruiseCopenhagen's new campaign, which adds a new microsite to its website showcasing plenty of good reasons to include Copenhagen in your itinerary during these months.
For cruise lines visiting Copenhagen during the off-season and low season, this means discounts at the port and more space at attractions. Cruise passengers will have the opportunity to explore Copenhagen's unique attractions and atmosphere in autumn, winter, and during the Christmas season.
“There are many advantages to taking a cruise during the off-season. In addition to port discounts and more space both in the port and at attractions, it’s more sustainable to spread tourism throughout the year. Based on our experience, we know that most guests have a better time in Copenhagen when the attractions aren’t too crowded,” says Claus Bødker, director of CruiseCopenhagen.
Visiting Copenhagen outside of peak season leaves cruise ship guests with the best guides practically to themselves and more time to explore the attractions. They can also attend seasonal events and attractions such as Culture Night, the floating St. Lucia, winter jazz, and the Copenhagen Light Festival.
“Autumn and winter are the most conducive seasons for the Danish concept of “hygge.” There’s no better time of year to experience Copenhagen’s cozy atmosphere,” says Claus Bødker, director of CruiseCopenhagen.
Copenhagen guide during peak and off-peak seasons
– October and November: During this period, tourists can attend Copenhagen's biggest annual one-day event, Cultural Night. In the evening, more than 250 museums, theaters, libraries, and other venues open their doors for a festive celebration with events and tours.
It's also Halloween time in Tivoli, where the Tivoli Gardens are filled with terrifying Halloween decorations, food, and events.
– December: In December, the streets of Copenhagen are illuminated with beautiful Christmas lights, and various Christmas events take place throughout the city. A very special experience is the Floating Santa Lucia; kayaks decorated for Christmas sail along the canals while singing Christmas carols.
Another Christmas hit is a visit to the Tivoli Gardens, which in December become a true winter wonderland.
– January: Denmark is known for its beautiful design, and January brings the sales. This gives design-loving tourists on a budget the chance to take home a piece of Danish design.
– February: In February, two major festivals take place in Copenhagen: Winterjazz, which can be enjoyed in various music venues around the city, and the Copenhagen Light Festival, in which international artists and designers illuminate Copenhagen with bright colors.
