The Costa Atlantica and the Costa Mediterranea will leave the Costa Cruises fleet to become part of a new Chinese company formed by the joint venture of Carnival Corporation and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
The Costa Atlantica was the first ship built for Costa Cruises after Carnival Corporation acquired the company. Launched in July 2000, it has a gross tonnage of 85,700 and a capacity for 2,112 passengers in a double occupancy configuration. It will leave the fleet at the end of 2019, coinciding with the arrival of the new Costa Smeralda.
The Costa Mediterranea, meanwhile , is a twin of the former, inaugurated in May 2003, and the date on which it will leave the company has not yet been announced.
At the same time, it has been announced that two new 133,500-ton ships will be built in China for CSSC's new brand, Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd.
