Madrid, April 6, 2018 – The cruise industry continues to make significant efforts and investments in technology, driven by a robust environmental policy.Shipping companies are deeply committed to sustainability because, aside from being a legal obligation, preserving the planet's natural resources is also essential for future generations and for the cruise experience itself. Ships are increasingly modern and efficient, and are subject to international maritime transport regulations, often exceeding legal requirements. Currently, a cruise ship consumes up to 70% less fuel than it did 20 years ago.
Although cruise ships represent a minimal percentage of total vessel traffic – accounting for only 1.2% of total emissions from ships in European ports – they are pioneers in developing responsible environmental practices. To date, cruise lines have invested over $1 billion in new technologies and cleaner fuels to reduce emissions. Among these advancements, the industry has designed and installed Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) on ships, which have proven to reduce sulfur oxide levels by up to 98%. The sector is committed to preserving and protecting the environment through leadership in developing, promoting, and implementing policies and practices that go beyond international regulations and requirements for waste and emissions reduction. Examples include the use of advanced wastewater treatment systems, the use of alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), and the application of emissions reduction technologies.
These ships also employ some of the most innovative waste recycling, reduction, and reuse strategies in the world. Some ships are recycling or reusing nearly 100% of the waste generated on board, converting it into energy. On average, cruise ships recycle 60% more waste per person than is recycled per person on land.
The cruise industry collaborates with national and international organizations to develop and implement sustainable practices that protect the environment. Furthermore, each ship undergoes several inspections annually, both internal and external, and all environmental information is available on government and industry websites.
