According to projections from the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), Cozumel Island will become the number one cruise destination in the world in 2017, as reported by Reportur.
Marisol Vanegas Pérez, Secretary of State Tourism (Sedetur), commented: “We celebrate Cozumel’s leadership in cruise tourism. We want to maintain this position and, through the public policy implemented by the governor’s administration, contribute to reducing inequalities and generating more and better opportunities for all.”.
Thanks to this significant development, Mexico is also positioned as the country that will receive the most cruise tourists this year. In 2016, the arrival of cruise passengers to the country increased by 11.8 percent, rising from 5,522,612 passengers to 6,177,214; this year, the increase is estimated at 4.9 percent, with 6,482,785 travelers expected, Cozumel being the destination that will receive almost half of this market.
As a country, Mexico ranks as the world leader, followed by the Bahamas, with the United States in third place. Vanegas Pérez emphasized that this result is due, in part, to the successful strategies implemented by state governments, which have incentivized this industry.
